Lyrical / Contemporary
This form of dance is most often seen in contemporary music shows, like Cirque du Soleil and the television show “So You Think You Can Dance”. The goal of the lyrical dancers is to convey the emotion of a song’s lyrics. Intense emotional expression of the face and body are necessary to tell a story that evolves along the lines of the song to which lyrical dance is performed. Characteristics of this style are flowing dance moves that connect throughout the dance. The upper body movements to be quite different form ballet styles, with body angles unfamiliar to either jazz or ballet.
Lyrical/Contemporary Attire
Tight fitting dancewear or exercise styled clothing. Dancers can dance barefoot. The preferred footwear is tan jazz shoes or a half ballet shoe called “Pirouettes”.
