Tap dance is a dance performed wearing shoes fitted with metal taps, characterized by rhythmical tapping of the toes and heels. It is a form of dance characterized by using the sounds of tap shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion. Two major variations on tap dance exist: rhythm (jazz) tap and Broadway tap. Broadway tap focuses on dance; it is widely performed in musical theater. Rhythm tap focuses on musicality, and practitioners consider themselves to be a part of the jazz or hip hop tradition. Tap Dance was developed in the USA during the 19th century. The name Tap comes from the tapping sound made when the metal plates on the tap shoe connects with the hard surface of the floor. This lively, rhythmic dance makes the performer not just a dancer but somewhat of a percussionist as well. Precise, rhythmical patterns of foot movement and tapping will be taught.
